It seems like these days that parents want to get their children started out early in everything, wheter it's T-ball, swimming, or other various activities that involve their children being active and socializing with the possibility of maybe getting a scholarship in that sport. Have parents gone off the deep end with Mixed Martial Arts, the new phenomenon that has huge body builders pounding each other into submission?

One side of the people say that this is a good thing, it's teaching children how to defend themselves and promotes self discipline. These same people would also tell you that it's really no different that starting your kid out playing T-ball, but it's actually more beneficial because they are more active.

The other side of people who are completely against MMA associated with children say it's way to violent to start out at young age especially when children are starting at the age of 6. Playing T-ball or basketball provides all of the same components of interaction and skill development without the concept of throwing punches at other children.

I feel as though Martial arts is a great sport for children, although at the ages of 5 and 6 I think they should be playing something a lot less violent. MMA should be something a child or adolescent takes up because it is in their own interest of for you thoughts of personal safety. I took a Martial arts class once only because I wanted to know the 101 of self defense. I feel as though it does teach children unnecessary ways to fight, and at such a young age.

I am kind of thinking that age five is a little too young to learn how to fight. I think some people see it as not only fighting but self discipline as well. This is completely true, it does teach you self discipline but how much self discipline can a 5 year old have. I know when i was in karate (age 6) i would go home and practice my new moves on my friends even though i was told not to. I believe that you have to have a certain maturity level to practice MMA.

I agree that mixed martial arts is a great sport for children to learn at a young age. It teaches children discipline, motivation, confidence, respect, and self defense. The different techniques in MMA for example: Muay Thai, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Sambo, Judo, and Sanda are all defensive moves. True MMA is about defensive strategies, granted that now a day when people watch it, they watch it for the knockouts and slugfests. But the people who created, started, and even teach these techniques now will always tell you that these moves and techniques are a defensive strategy. You must learn to discipline yourself and use your knowledge to block and defend opponent’s aggressive attacks. Then use the techniques and skills taught to you to reverse and move in to use your skills to win the match. MMA is not only a physical sport but a mental and psychological sport also. It will teach children to be physically strong and intellectually strong. MMA also teaches children to respect others, work together with others and as a team, and be a good sport all while the child is becoming very healthy and athletic. I wish that when I was at the age of 5 or 6 I would have started MMA.
